Our Story

MitiMeth was established to address the negative environmental and social impacts resulting from waste by creating new sustainable materials derived from invasive aquatic weeds and agricultural residues

Founded by Achenyo Idachaba in 2011, MitiMeth transforms invasive water hyacinth into hand-woven, eco-friendly home décor and accessories. Motivated by a passion for sustainability and community empowerment, Achenyo created MitiMeth to tackle the environmental challenge of waterway-clogging weeds while providing meaningful income opportunities for local artisans, particularly women. Under her leadership, MitiMeth has trained hundreds of artisans and earned international recognition, including the prestigious Cartier Women’s Initiative Award, for its innovative approach to design, social impact, and environmental stewardship.

Rural communities in Nigeria have been affected by the infestation of water hyacinth infestation for decades. Our creative Founder, had an idea to transform this environmental menace into beneficial use. She befriended artisans in the Sabo and Ojurin, Bodija communities of Ibadan who had knowledge weaving with doum palm and rattan. She worked closely with them to produce table tidiers and storage baskets: two fitting products to make from a tangled weed!
